MW2 closing in on UK sales record

Having surged back up the charts to claim second spot in the ELSPA GfK Chart-Track Top 40 this week, Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 should in the next few days cement its position as the UK’s best selling game ever.

In doing so it will pass Nintendo’s DS puzzle title Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training. MW2 is currently enjoying its highest chart position since 2010 week three.

The industry is now accustomed to Modern Warfare 2’s record-breaking ways. In its first five days of availability it broke the UK week one sales record and made a whopping $550m at global retail – a number that Activision said made it the largest entertainment release of all time.

In total it sold over 12m units in under two months 2009 and has since gone on to sell over 20m units worldwide.

Post-release DLC for the game has also been purchased digitally over 20m times since arriving earlier this year.
