NSW backs introduction of an R18+ rating

New South Wales Attorney-General Greg Smith has announced today that he supports an in-principle move to introduce an R18+ rating in Australia.

ABC has reported the news, confirming that after the in-principle agreement was reached at the SCAG meeting in Adelaide last month to introduce the rating at a national level (leaving individual states to implement the rating as they saw fit), New South Wales is no longer in danger of missing out on the R18+ rating.

Mr Smith had previously been the lone opponent of a federal introduction of an R18+ rating, and had confirmed his intentions not to give his support at the SCAG meeting.

Given Mr Smith’s position, New South Wales was a contender for missing out on the R18+ rating until today.

Mr Smith said: "With strong classification guidelines in place, an R18+ rating should result in violent games currently rated MA15+ in Australia being reclassified as adults-only, as they already are in many other countries."
