Executive director Atsushi Inaba expresses interest in franchise as Vigil's future remains in doubt

Platinum Games boss ‘would love to buy Darksiders’

The executive director of Platinum Games has said he would love to buy the Darksiders IP from THQ.

The Vigil Games-developed IP is currently still up for grabs after no companies made a bid for the studio or franchise in yesterday’s THQ auction.

Taking to Twitter, as spotted by Polygon, Atsushi Inaba said he would be interested in purchasing the IP, but only “if it was cheap”.

Despite expressing interest, Platinum Games has declined to comment on the matter.

THQ was effectively dissolved yesterday as a number of companies swooped in to buy a number of its assets.

Koch Media purchased Volition and the Metro series for a combined $28 million, while Sega bought Relic Entertainment for $26 million and Ubisoft picked up THQ Montreal for $2.5 million.

The lack of interest in Vigil Games or its Darksiders IP has left question marks over the future of the studio, although it still remains up for sale as part of THQ’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In an open letter, Vigil lead combat designer Ben Cureton expressed his sadness that Vigil had not been picked up by a publisher like its sister studios and suggested that the developer would be breaking up having failed to find a buyer.

“Maybe you can imagine what it feels like when you read the list of who bought what only to discover your name is not on the list. Why? Did we do something wrong? Were we not good enough? Were we not worth ‘anything?’ Imagine that,” he said.

“Vigil was filled with people that I would put up against the best in the industry. People that made my work better, people that made me a better designer, and people that made me a better person. And now they are gone. Their seats are empty.”
