Sega’s Creative Assembly lands Warhammer licence

Total War developer Creative Assembly has been handed the Warhammer licence by owner Sega.

A new multi-title licensing agreement with IP owner Games Workshop has led to the formation of a new development team within the studio, with the first game scheduled to launch from beyond 2013”.

Other video game Warhammer licensees include EA, which publishes free-to-play title Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes and THQ, which has been responsible for the many Warhammer 40,000 games that have been released over the last decade.

It is unclear if this new deal impact on any of those existing agreements.

With this year being our 25th anniversary it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner,” Creative Assembly’s studio director Tim Heaton stated.

The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers. We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We’re bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that video gamers will absolutely love.”

Back in 2003 Sega announced a Climax-developed online Warhammer game, though development was scrapped in 2004.

UPDATE:Eurogamer reports that THQ retains the Warhammer 40,000 license with Sega obtaining the license once held by EA.
