Sony to axe 10,000 jobs worldwide

Around 10,000 jobs will be axed across Sony’s worldwide operations over the next 12 months.

The number represents six per cent of the company’s total workforce.

Although unconfirmed as of yet, the report comes from The Associated Press and arrives only two days ahead of Kaz Hirai’s strategic update” on Thursday.

The move is designed to help the struggling multi-national return to profit.

A number of strategic alterations have been confirmed, however. Sony’s chemical unit will be sold and its LCD panel business is being merged with Toshiba and Hitachi.

As a result some 5,000 employees face a possible relocation if they wish to keep their jobs.
