VIDEO: Watch Microsoft’s incredible Minecraft Hololens demo

Shenmue 3, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy VII – E3 2015 has been full of big moments, and Microsoft’s Minecraft Hololens demo is right up there with the biggest.

There are a ton of caveats you could apply to the demo, which was no doubt rehearsed to within an inch of its life, but you’ll rarely see better a proof of concept. And Minecraft is absolutely the best IP with which Microsoft can show off its fancy new augmented reality tech.

In it we see the user playing the game as if it were projected on the wall. It’s not, of course – the screen is just a virtual construct created by Hololens. Which is how with a simply look and voice command the user can swap a virtual wall for a virtual world.

Some camera trickery allows the audience to see what can be seen through the headset – a 3D recreation of the game world coming to life and emerging from a table. It really is quite something.

Furthermore, an additional user playing the game on a tablet can be seen walking about the 3D version of the world.
