WoW subscription numbers dip

Though the 11.4m subscribers to Blizzard’s world-conquering MMO World of Warcraft make for some impressive reading, it actually represents nearly a three year low for the game.

The current number was revealed in Activision’s financials last night, Kotaku reports.

The game reached its highest point in October last year as the excitement for the release of the game’s most recent expansion Cataclysm began to build. At that point the game exceeded the 12m mark.

Current numbers are some 600,000 below this.

Before the release of the game’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, subscriber numbers stood at 11m, rising to 11.5m shortly after release.

The publisher also confirmed that it won’t be realising any expansions for the game in calendar 2011.
