Screen Digest: MMO subscriptions on the fall

Subscriptions for MMOs have declined for the first time, according to new research.

Despite the drop, microtransactions continue to grow strongly”, said Piers Harding-Rolls of analytics firm Screen Digest, which carried out the study.

He added I don’t believe we’ll see subscriptions grow again in this sector as microtransactions take hold.

Although there is some upside to this view, which depends on the performance of The Old Republic when it hits the market and the continued growth of Rift.

Harding-Rolls believes MMOs remain the biggest digital opportunity in game” as the market is now worth 10 per cent of all consumer spend on games content across the West.
