Steam adds user tagging, chaos ensues

Valve today added the ability for users to add tags to games listed in its Steam library.

Want to hazard a guess as to what happened next?

Well, PC Gamer notes that major plot points in games such as Final Fantasy VII and BioShock Infinite have been ruined while Supreme Ruler carries the tags "the holocaust never happened" and "Jews did 9/11".

Eurogamer, meanwhile, has seen the casual” tag added to games such as Dark Souls and Thief while Deadly Premonition now carries the tag beard simulator”. How about leftfield indie hit Gone Home? That has not a game” and bad”. Fez and Godus, meanwhile, are now tagged diva dev”.

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Fish AI, Dog
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Uplay

Tomb Raider – Female Protagonist

And what is Valve’s response to all of this?

"Tags can be a good indicator of when there is a mismatch between how you perceive your game, and how your game is perceived by customers," it said in the Steam tags FAQ. "Often this is simply because there is some piece of information regarding the game that customers feel is missing from the store page."
