Summer Games Done Quick raises $2.1m (£1.61m) for Doctors Without Borders

Summer Games Done Quick has come to a close, and the speed running event raised a huge $2,122,229 (£1.61m) for charity, a new record for the SGDQ event.

SGDQ is one of two bi-annual speedrunning marathons for charity that take place as part of Games Done Quick. The other, Awesome Games Done Quick, takes place during the winter. Both events stream non-stop for a week, with donations going to different charities. The next event, AGDQ, will take place between January 6-13, 2019.

The cash from this event will go to Doctors Without Borders, an international non-profit that seeks to provide medical aid, care and relief to those who need it around the world.

This event saw speedruns of Ratchet & Clank, Splatoon 2, Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, Contra, a host of Sonic games, Silent Hill, Left 4 Dead 2 and a variety of other titles.

The event is often viewed as one of the more positive experiences in the game, however one of the earlier interview segments featured one transgender participant being deadnamed, which caused controversy. Otherwise, the event was largely celebrated, and with over $2m donated to charity, it’s a strong reminder that games can be good, actually.
