Tesco to debut Extra revamp in Watford next week

The Watford Extra brand of UK supermarket Tesco will re-open next week debuting the retailer’s brand new vision for its largest stores.

It’s all part of Tesco’s decision to cut back on large store openings and even reduce the footage of some of its largest outlets.

The Guardian reports that the outlet will be the first to feature a Giraffe restaurant following Tesco’s acquisition of the chain earlier this year. It will also boast a nail salon, a Harris & Hoole coffee shop, a Euphorium bakery and what is described as a ‘community space’.

That’s not the end of new ideas, either. Tesco Stockton-on-Tees is getting a soft play zone while the Coventry store is getting a carvery restaurant. Tesco is also in talks with Sports Direct to open a number of in-store concessions.

"In the past, large hypermarkets were popular because they offered a massive range of products and people liked being able to buy everything under one roof – it made life easier,” UK boss Chris Bush said.

The internet has changed all that – people don’t even need to leave their homes to go shopping and more people are using convenience stores for regular top-up shops. So we need to give them good reasons to come to our larger stores."
