The Void bringing more Marvel/Disney ‘hyper-reality’ experiences out

The Void, a company making mixed reality experience products, has partnered with LucasFilm to create five new VR/AR titles based on Disney and Marvel IPs.

The news comes via a Fast Company exclusive, which reveals the Void is working alongside Lucas’s ‘immersive entertainment division’ ILMxLAB. The first of the projects will release in the autumn and is based on the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet. Following that will be a Marvel experience in 2019, though details have not yet been released.

The Void does not focus on these mixed reality experiences for the home, however, with installations being seen in the likes of theme parks and shopping centres – the company’s successful tie in with Star Wars, ‘Secrets of the Empire’ made its way to the UK last year, so it’s not out of the question to see more projects arriving on these shores.

Fast Company reported Curtis Hickman, The Void’s founder and chief creative officer, as saying: “Very fundamentally we ask ourselves what are places people have always wanted to step into and be a part of, but were never possible before. Disney and Marvel have a lot of worlds that people want to step into that work well with our technology. As the medium grows and is understood and the demand continues to expand, the platform itself is going to expand.”

The Void’s ‘hyper-reality’ experiences involve elements of VR, AR, real-time effects, professionally built sets, and the ability to see, hear, even smell and feel things around you. It’s this kind of total immersion that doesn’t lend itself well to, say, PlayStation VR or Oculus Rift, obviously.
