Transformers writer in talks for Tomb Raider movie reboot

The re-launch of the Tomb Raider movie franchise appears to have found its director and writer.

The currently untitled film is said to be a reboot of the series, which previously saw two instalments – 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life – both starring Angelina Jolie.

Its been in development for more than five years, but now seems to be moving ahead with the confirmation that Norwegian director Roar Uthaug will helm the project as his first English-language effort. (Thanks, The Hollywood Reporter.)

Previous directors tipped for the role included The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty’s Kathryn Bigelow and Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, co-writer of Transformers 5, has also been attached to the film as the potential writer. The script was most recently penned by TMNT scribe Evan Daugherty.

The new film will be produced by GK Films, having passed from Warner Bros to Square Enix over the last few years.

In line with the 2013 reboot of the video game series, the movie will focus on Lara Croft’s first adventure and transformation into the titular adventurer.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider remains the second-most-successful video game movie adaptation to date, after 2010’s Prince of Persia spin-off.
