VIDEO: Fallout 4 gameplay sees VATS return, building construction and the pre-apocalypse

Bethesda dropped a major bomb during its first gameplay reveal for Fallout 4 – literally.

Showing off the title at its pre-E3 press conference, the publisher revealed that the beginning of the game will take place before the series’ defining nuclear disaster, providing players a taste of both pre- and post-apocalyptic life.

Extensive character customisation makes a return, with both male and female player characters available.

There was also a demonstration of Fallout 4’s combat system, which will build upon the slow-motion VATS mechanic first seen in 2008’s Fallout 3.

And, of course, the dog introduced in the teaser trailer released last week was also back for more, receiving a fervent reception from the crowd.

Players will be able to issue the canine specific commands, including sending the mutt to fetch items and participate in fights.

One big addition to the game, set for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One this November 10th, is the ability to gather scrap and construct buildings and items from it, allowing players to build up their own settlements in the wasteland.
