Warcraft is now the highest-grossing video game film ever

Duncan Jones’ Warcraft may not have been a critical darling, but it is now the most successful game movie of all time.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film has generated $377.6m globally since its debut. This is more successful than Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which made $336bn, and The Angry Birds Movie, which has brought in $327m.

Warcraft had been considered by some a flop, having a very weak opening weekend. In America, sales fell 73 per cent in its second week, bringing in $6.5m.

Box Office Mojo compares this drop-off to 2005’s Doom, and highlights that this is the third largest second week drop for a film playing in over 3,000 cinemas, beaten by Friday the 13th, 80.4 per cent, and Fifty Shades of Grey, which saw a 73.9 per cent dip.

International sales saved Warcraft, however. Of the $337.6m in total ticket sales, over $200m came from China. In that region, Warcraft out-sold Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
