White Stripes and Led Zep snub music games

White Stripes’ Jack White has declared it depressing” and sad” that music games such as Guitar Hero are so influential in the way children discover music.

Led Zeppelin’s songwriter and guitarist Jimmy Page also spoke out on the matter, questioning the relevance of plastic drums to kids wishing to learn about music.

Speaking at an NME press conference, White said: It’s depressing to have a label come and tell you that [Guitar Hero] is how kids are learning about music and experiencing music.”

He went on to explain that he does not care which format people should get their music in” but if it has be through video games, that’s a little sad”.

Page added that he didn’t believe people were able to learn anything significant about playing instruments through games. He pointed to his band’s own drummer as an example of how games cannot recreate the experience.

"You think of the drum part that John Bonham did on Led Zeppelin’s first track on the first album, Good Times Bad Times," he said. "How many drummers in the world can play that part, let alone on Christmas morning?"

Music from White Stripes is already playable in the Guitar Hero series. Led Zeppelin has yet to appear in a rhythm action title.
