Nintendo Switch Online service to launch with NES titles and debut cloud saves

Nintendo has revealed more details on its highly awaited Switch Online service. Releasing this September, it will launch with a collection of 20 NES games. Officially called “Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online”, it will give members access to Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros. 3, Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Soccer, Super Mario Bros, plus ten more titles to be announced later this year.

Some of these titles will support online competitive or co-op multiplayer, the announcement said, with an option to watch friends play single-player titles online as well. All the NES titles will be available offline as well and will support voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online app (which is already available).

Nintendo Switch Online will also bring cloud saves to the platform, which will support “most Nintendo Switch games,” the announcement said. It will also give members the opportunity to participate in co-op and competitive online games for titles such as Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, Mario Tennis Aces and Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido.

In addition to the one month, three months and 12 months memberships that had already been announced, Nintendo Switch Online is also getting a family membership, with up to eight players able to use the service, even on different consoles.

Initially set to launch in autumn 2017, Nintendo Switch Online was then pushed back to ‘early 2018’ and then to September this year.
