While mobile app technology, AIR, rises in popularity

Adobe flaunts Flash growth on mobile

Adobe has predicted that some 132 million smartphones will have installed its Flash platform by the end of the year.

The group, which last year had engaged in a high-profile spat with Apple, remains optimistic about its future on non-iOS devices.

It said that Flash Player 10.1 was downloaded more than 7 million times from the Android Market, while another 20 million smartphones had shipped with the Flash version built in.

The group expects Flash will be available on more than 50 tablets by the end of 2011.

Meanwhile, the firm said its AIR technology is now supported by more than 84 million smartphones too.

AIR, part of the Flash platform, allows developers to port games and apps onto iOS, Blackberry and Android devices. The platform integrates apps built in Flash, Java, HTML and ActionScript.

While Apple doesn’t support Falsh game development, Adobe sees AIR as a key way of getting Flash games on iPhones.

Adobe said more than 200 million devices will support AIR apps by the end of 2011, according to a Venturebeat report.

During the first two months since the release of AIR, developers have used the tech to create over 1,500 apps, said Adobe senior vice president David Wadhwani.
