Marketplace accelerates to 1bn apps per month, Google claims

Android ‘hits 15 billion apps’

Google’s Android marketplace has surpassed 15bn app downloads since its launch in October of 2008.

A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that the figure was passed for the newly-branded Google Play Store ‘a few weeks ago.’

TechCrunch proposed that Google tabs around 1bn app downloads per month, while Apple still leads with 1.25bn app downloads. Google Play currently offers around 100,000 apps behind Apple’s estimated total of 600,000.

In comparison, Apple recently announced its App Store had blown by the 25bn mark.
