Fourth buyout in 18 months for browser games giant; More acquisitions planned

Bigpoint takes over 49Games

Online games provider Bigpoint has today acquired console sports entertainment studio 49Games.

Over 40 full-time employees will now become part of the publishing giant’s international team and will be developing online games instead of console titles.

Current projects at 49Games will be completed before the switch, Bigpoint has said.

Rights to 49Games’ multiplatform technology, as well as its assets and licences, are said to remain the property of the studio.

“The team at 49Games is one of the best development teams in the console sports-games industry,” said Bigpoint founder Heiko Hubertz.

“We’re very excited to add them to the Bigpoint team for our online games.”

He added that Bigpoint is planning on expanding and will “definitely” make more international acquisitions.

49games CEO Jan-Hendrik Ohl said: “I’m very pleased with Bigpoint’s acquisition of our development team and I’m confident that the team will deliver fantastic 3D MMOs for the quickly growing international online company.”

This latest takeover comes after a busy 18 months that has seen the publishing giant take over Radon Labs, Elofd and Planet Moon studios.
