'We think the time is now right for us to give back and engage with the community in a more meaningful way'

BioWare open sources networking tech Orbit

BioWare has made its online technology platform Orbit open source.

The tool is a Java framework designed to make it easier to build and maintain distributed and scalable online services. It has been used in games such as Dragon Age: Inquisition and Dragon Age Keep.

BioWare Online Services lead software developer Joe Hegarty said Orbit is still in early development, but the studio hoped to improve the tech by working with other developers on the project.

Orbit is already available on GitHub under a BSD licence.

“We have been leveraging open source technology internally for quite some time, and we think the time is now right for us to give back and engage with the community in a more meaningful way,” said Hegarty.
