WoW firm’s unannounced MMO was “the most ambitious thing you could possibly imagine” but scrapped after seven years

Blizzard cancels Project Titan

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has confirmed it has cancelled Project Titan, its next-gen MMO.

The title was taken back to the drawing board last year with a team of 30 devs due to large design and technology changes needed for the game.

Project Titan has been in development for seven years and was billed to be the next generation of the MMO. But now Polygon reports all work has stopped on the game.

“We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs,” co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime told the site. “So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine and it didn’t come together.”

The reasons the exec gave was that the team couldn’t “find the fun [or] passion” it was looking for with Titan’s design. In the end, the company put the project through a re-evaluation period.

“What we re-evaluated is whether that’s the game we really wanted to be making,” said Morhaime. “The answer is no.

“It’s always really, really hard to make those kind of decisions. It was hard when we cancelled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we cancelled StarCraft Ghost. But it has always resulted in better-quality work.”
