MMO subscriptions 'give studio the edge' in moving to next-gen

Blizzard in ‘great position’ with 10.2m WOW subs

To the studio behind World of Warcraft, 10.2 million subscribers can’t be a bad thing.

Despite fluctuations, World of Warcraft remains the most popular MMO in history, and has another big expansion on the way.

Games Industry International reported that during Activision’s Earnings call, Blizzard head Mike Morhaime said the number of subscriptions put his company in a ‘great position’.

Morhaime is confident that the expansion, Mists of Pandaria, will do well by the game’s subscribers, and keep subscriptions high as his studio works on their next-gen MMO.

With BioWare MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic losing 23 percent of its subscribers, things are not looking good for rival MMOs, but next-generation titles like Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls Online could finally bring competition for WoW, which has dominated the genre for years.
