Brian Fargo to retire after producing Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3 will be InXile boss Brian Fargo’s last game, with Fargo announcing plans to retire after it ships.

The industry powerhouse, who founded Interplay in 1983, has told Eurogamer that he wants to relax after a lengthy career in games, and will retire after Wasteland 3 ships in 2019.

"Wasteland 2 and Torment both came out great," he said. "The Mage’s Tale’s got a great buzz. The Bard’s Tale 4 looks spectacular. Wasteland 3 is building on Wasteland 2."

"It seems like a good time to drop the mic."

Fargo’s Interplay will always be best known for creating the original Fallout titles and publishing both the Baldur’s Gate and Descent franchises. Interplay were a dominant force in PC gaming for the nineties, but failed to make the leap to console games successfully, and by 2001, French company Titus Software had acquired majority control of Interplay and Fargo left the company.

He founded InXile in 2002 and recently has been successfully crowdfunding RPG titles like Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera and The Bards Tale 4.

Wasteland 3 was also crowdfunded, and will now be marking the end of his 38 year career in video games. He’s not yet named who’ll be taking over the top job at the company.
