Open source development platform expanding into the West after success in China

Cocos2d-x game engine hits 300,000 downloads

Cross-platform and open source game engine Cocos2d-x has been downloaded 300,000 times.

Launched in 2010, the 2D development platform has been harnessed by a number of developers including Handy Games and PlayFirst.

The game engine’s biggest market is currently situated in China, where it has been used in seven of the top ten grossing iPhone apps on the Chinese App Store. The company also claimed development platform powered almost all of the top grossing Android games in the country.

“Cocos2d-x offers powerful tools for large established mobile studios, small developers just getting started, and everyone in between,” said Cocos2d-x chief maintainer Zhe Whang.

Cocos2d-x allows developers to code in C++ and then distributes apps to multiple platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry. The open source engine is mainly run by Fishing Joy developer CocoaChina.
