French indy acquires interactive rights to classic fantasy novels

Cyanide creating A Song of Ice and Fire game

French independent developer Cyanide has secured the interactive rights to develop the first computer games based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels.

In collaboration with the books’ author George R. R. Martin, the Parisian studio is already developing a PC and console game based on the long-running series of books.

"We are all huge fans of A Song of Ice and Fire, so it is a true honour for our teams to be entrusted with creating the first video games inspired by this masterpiece," said Cyanide’s Managing Director Patrick Pligersdorffer. "The twists and turns of the plot will allow us to deliver an experience which can be enjoyed by both long-time fans as well as gamers new to the series."

Published in the UK by Bantam Books, A Song of Ice and Fire’s print incarnation has already seen successful translation into board and card games, and media company HBO has recently secured the rights with intent to produce a television series based on the fictional universe.

It is not yet confirmed if there will be any direct relation between the televised version and the video game.

Cyanide also has a presence in Montreal, Canada, and is currently readying the release of Blood Bowl – a game itself based on the Warhammer tabletop entertainment product.
