Dare to be Digital 2012 competitors Must Make Games talk exclusively to Develop about working on their entry title Badgers vs Turtles

Dare Blogs – Must Make Games

Badgers vs Turtles is a turn-based strategy game for the iPad. Players take command of either a squad of Royalist Badgers or Dynasty Turtles and wage all-out war in gameplay suited for veterans and new players alike. Gameplay comes with a twist as special attacks require fast and frenzied screen-mashing to achieve extra damage and get the highest scores.

The overall goal of the game is to eliminate the other player’s king while protecting your own. Players must use skill, strategy and the unique game units to win.

With many thanks to the Dare 2012 organisers Abertay University, the experience has been an amazing first step into the games industry. With just nine weeks of development our prototype has come a long way from week one.

On a regular occasion we received visits from industry professionals who would take a look at our game and mentor us, providing insightful feedback and suggestions that we would not normally see during development. I have thoroughly enjoyed what Dare has had to offer and I look forward to Dare ProtoPlay this weekend.

Firstly we have learned the importance of working in a team and how our individual skillsets contribute towards the project. We have found the close working environment great as we can all bounce ideas off each other and learn from the other teams in our surrounding workspace.

In terms of video game development, Dare has been a constant learning curve for us as we have been discovering new ideas and techniques for our game each day. This is something that only a studio-like environment could provide for our team.

We are most definitely. We are excited for the people at ProtoPlay to come along and play our game, not only young gamers but experienced turn-based veterans. Our game was received really well during a morning of focus testing involving young gamers so we are anxious and looking forward to showing even more people Badgers vs Turtles.

As a team, we are currently uncertain as to what will become of our team after Dare, as some of us have just graduated and will be looking for full-time studio work while some of us are returning for a final year of higher education.

Badgers vs Turtles becomes a success at ProtoPlay we may look into the possibilities of moving from the iPad prototype to a final game for the iOS app store. Personally I would like to continue as a technical artist and work in a game studio.
