'I am not interested in giving them 'fun', I want to give them meaning'

David Cage: I want to challenge players’ minds

David Cage wants to challenge players’ minds and not their thumbs with Beyond: Two Souls, the Quantic Dream CEO has said.

Speaking to Edge, the Heavy Rain developer said he was more interested in giving players meaning with his latest title rather than just fun.

He added that his goal with Beyond was to create something different rather than sticking to traditional game development cues.

"My goal is to surprise people, to give them something they want without knowing they want it," said Cage.

"I want to create an emotional journey, a unique experience. I am not interested in giving them ‘fun’, I want to give them meaning. I don’t want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds."

David Cage has been an outspoken supporter of storytelling in games in the past, and has championed the ability of the industry to offer emotional experiences for major audiences, rather than just children and teenagers.

Beyond: Two Souls, which will feature Inception actress Ellen Page in the lead role, follows a girl hunter by the government for her abilities to experience two worlds.

The game is currently slated to release early next year.
