Rein brushes off latest gossip that Unreal Engine is being bought film financier Legendary

Epic acquisition talk is “just another rumour”

Mark Rein has brushed off the latest round of gossip that Epic Games is to be acquired by Legendary Pictures.

Speaking to Develop, he described the latest report as "just another rumour".

Legendary was reported by Hollywood trade mag Variety as being interested in working closer with Epic Games while working on the Gears of War movie.

Rein also reiterated the comment he gave Variety: "We’re not going to comment on the rumor. We have already publicly announced that we’re working with Legendary pictures on the Gears of War movie and that we have the utmost respect for Thomas Tull and his organisation."

Epic has remained a popular source of acquisition speculation given the ubiquity of its Unreal Engine tech and popularity of its Gears of War and Unreal Tournament IPs.

In the past year, Microsoft and EA have both been rumoured to be interested in buying Epic. Rein famously rejected reports of the former during GDC, jokingly telling us that the Xbox 360 format holder would have to stump up $2bn if it wanted to buy Epic.
