News-themed gaming, educational Minecraft and games charity all honoured in annual list

Games initiatives named in Nominet Trust 100

The Nominet Trust has highlighted three video games projects and organisations in the 2014 edition of its NT100.

The list is billed as a catalogue of the world’s best "tech for good" and features a variety of ventures with goals ranging from fighting human trafficking to beating cancer. There are 25 UK projects on this year’s list, as well as three games-specific initiatives.

First up is Game The News, the ongoing experiment from Bristol studio Auroch Digital to create a short video game every day. Each title is based on the biggest news story of that day, often satirising the topic at hand.

Next is MinecraftEdu, a special edition of Mojang’s phenomenon that has been designed to help teach children a variety of subjects, including history, languages and those all-important STEM skills. The game was created by Finnish firm TeacherGaming.

Finally, Special Effect – the Oxfordshire-based games charity – was listed for its continued work helping disabled children enjoy video games just as everyone else does.

Nominet Trust CEO Annika Small said: “Digital technology has already transformed how we communicate, how we work, how we buy and sell. But we are only just beginning to scratch the surface of ways that technology can be used to transform how we address complex social challenges from health and education to poverty and climate change."
