The Borderlands team on art direction with Epic's tech

Gearbox Software talks Unreal Engine 3

Speaking in today’s feature on Unreal Engine 3’s role in the development of Borderlands, Gearbox Software’s president Randy Pitchford has been addressing how the Epic tech contributed towards the game’s unique style.

“Unreal Engine 3 is a great platform for the art direction because it supports so many great features for the kinds of materials we want to render,” said Pitchford.

“It’s also extensible," he added. "Our engineers have added to and extended the engine’s rendering features to make lighting and shading changes necessary for this distinctive look. We’ve been able to do this and remain compatible with the Unreal Engine 3 code base and accept new upgrades as they come, both from within Gearbox and from Epic, who are constantly improving the technology.”
