Publisher to integrate multiplayer server and matchmaking tools into future titles

Glu Mobile acquires GameSpy

Freemium games outfit Glu Mobile has expanded its cross-platform technology offerings with the acquisition of GameSpy.

The multiplayer server-based tech offers online features such as matchmaking, player statistics, friends lists, leaderboards and games media storage.

GameSpy has previously been integrated into Glu Mobile’s Gun Bros Multiplayer on Android, and will now be further utilised in a number of titles from the publisher later this year.

“Our acquisition of GameSpy brings Glu industry-recognised leadership in online, cross-platform technology infrastructure,” said Glu Mobile CEO Niccolo de Masi.

“GameSpy’s battle-tested team will enable Glu’s product roadmap to include robust and highly scalable multiplayer and social functionality. We expect that the acquisition of GameSpy will be earnings neutral in the near term.

"However, GameSpy team and technology is expected to help us drive higher monetization and lifetime value in Glu’s titles from 2013 on.”
