Grand Theft Auto V single-player DLC threatened by GTA Online success

There may never be any single-player DLC for Grand Theft Auto V.

When asked about the possibility by IGN, Rockster North’s director of design Imran Sarwar replied: "Right now our focus is on GTA Online which has exceeded our expectations.

We currently have all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity. The community we’ve been able to foster is massive, growing each day and we have so many ideas that have yet to make it into the game."

Its predecessor, GTA IV, received two substantial pieces of offline DLC, The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, which are regarded as two of the best post-release DLC packs ever made.

However, with 8m weekly users, GTA Online is too lucrative a beast for Rockstar to turn its back on. Indeed, the studio says that as long as user numbers persist so will its ongoing development efforts.

"Grand Theft Auto Online changed the flow of development from what we were traditionally used to, which has been a learning experience for everyone," Sarwar added.

"The shift to working on an evolving online game means there are fewer pauses in production – we are constantly producing content for GTA Online alongside everything else we are working on.

We have been really excited by the idea of online multiplayer for a long time, and with the evolving nature of what GTA Online has become, we’ve been able to realize a lot of our ideas which has been a fantastic experience. GTA Online’s success means we are going to be able to work on a lot more in the future too as we’ve learned a ton and have come up with even more ideas for future games."

Rockstar has, however, confirmed that it will no longer be developing GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360.
