IDC questions datacenter cost management

Large European firms expect a 10 per cent spend increase in datacentre management staff over the next year, a leading analyst group has claimed.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has condemned the firms’ expectations to increase spending, suggesting that the issue has arrived from poor practices.

IDC says a standout reason for the price hike is the diversity of datacenter management.

It says, for example, that only 14 per cent of organisations have a fully integrated management framework, and a number of companies are divided on the best methods of datacenter management.

They claim that a third of companies consider datacenter costs as a priority, with 69 per cent recognizing the need for improved datacenter alignment with business goals.

IDC adds that virtualisation (connecting all devices together online) has created new challenges in integrating sever, storage and network management.

They also claim that the virtualisation market is wide and heavily dependent on individual firms’ needs.

Commenting on these results, Chris Ingle, Associate Vice President, Consulting, at IDC said: "European organizations have moved on in their approach to managing their datacenter. Virtualization and automation have brought ways to reduce cost and free up resources. However, there is still potential to reduce cost by improving management."
