Duo developing new first-person shooter, Kickstarter goes live today

John Romero reunited with Id’s Adrian Carmack for Blackroom

After years of teasing his next project – and one rather amusing video – John Romero has finally revealed what he is working on.

The co-creator of Doom has been reunited with fellow Id Software co-founder Adrian Carmack, and together the pair is developing Blackroom – a first-person shooter designer to harken back to the classic days of Doom, Quake and the like.

Blackroom offers a single-player game that transports players throughout various holographic worlds, from medieval castles to pirate galleons, as well as a range of multiplayer modes that will draw from Romero and Carmack’s combined experience.

The game is planned for PC and will be fully moddable, with the community expected to add to the six multiplayer maps already built-in. It will also attempt to facilitate the time-honoured techniques developed by veteran Doom and Quake players, such as rocket jumping.

Blackroom is in development at Night Work Games, a subsidiary of Romero’s studio, and will be built on Unreal Engine 4. It will be partly funded by a Kickstarter campaign.

The community will also be invited to contribute to the game’s ongoing design, suggesting weapon and level ideas ahead of Blackroom’s projected 2018 launch.

We interviewed both Romero about the new game. Check out what he had to say here.
