id Software lead programmer tinkering with camera-controller

Kinect inspires mastermind Carmack

Microsoft’s disruptive motion-control technology Kinect appears to have inspired one of the industry’s most respected programmers.

id Software co-founder John Carmack told Joystiq that he has “an itch to make a Kinect title for Xbox Live.”

It’s not as non-committal a statement as it may appear. Carmack had an itch to go on holiday and build a DS game engine, and an itch to build a high-end title for iPhone. Both became a reality.

“I don’t even know what I’d want to do yet,” he admitted. “I can’t use Kinect for our real games; there just isn’t a place for our current FPSes on there, but it’s an interesting technology.”

He added that such a project would likely be released digitally through Xbox Live – which he describes as “the perfect platform” to release a Kinect game on, “at about the same scale of a game for an iOS device.”

Carmack tempered his enthusiasm for such a project, however, by claiming he has already spent his current budget of time for side-projects.

id Software’s latest title, Rage Mutant Bash TV, is now available on the App Store.
