Multiplayer focus as the hugely popular indie game's creator ponders the reason for his creation's success

Markus Persson maps out Minecraft’s future

Minecraft studio Mojang Specifications is to focus on introducing competitive multiplayer elements to its game in an attempt to maintain player interest in the exceedingly popular indie hit.

That’s what the game’s creator Markus Persson has told Develop in a rare interview published today. The developer, who has seen his game attract sales of up to €300,000 a day also plans to ramp up development speed as he fleshes out the multiplayer functionality.

"I think there’s a huge potential in competitive multiplayer modes like capture the flag and so on, which should keep people – including myself – interested for a long time," confirmed Persson.

"For the single player game and co-op game, I plan on adding some kind of overarching narrative to the game to drive the player forward and provide a sense of direction, and add many more new features, like monster towns and alchemy," he added.

Persson also touched on why he thinks Minecraft has enjoyed such staggering success: "I think Minecraft is a combination of a somewhat original game, and an indication that indie games are really an alternative to more traditional development styles. That has probably got a lot of different people’s attention across the world."
