Water Melon Development says upcoming cartridge-based Mega Drive outing could be heading to Xbox Live

New Mega Drive devs eyeing XBLA

The developers behind a brand new title for the long-gone but never forgotten Mega Drive have stated that their title may eventually be heading to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade service.

Water Melon Development is currently hard at work on Pier Solar, a brand new RPG for Sega’s 16-bit Mega Drive, which is due to be released on an authentic Mega Drive cartridge complete with box and manual.

In addition, the game will also ship with an audio/data CD that can be used in conjunction with Sega’s Mega Drive add-on the Mega CD to enhance the base game’s soundtrack and SFX.

“The door is open for a re-release or perhaps a remake on the current generation of consoles, when the Mega Drive/Mega CD version is finished,” the studio told CVG.

“We’ve been looking at XBLA since Microsoft opened up to XNA games and it’s a definite possibility in the future. At present though, we’re looking forward to the completion and release of the Mega Drive version, so that we can then start planning for new games. A next-gen port of Pier Solar, or maybe even its sequel, is definitely on the list of things to do.”

Pier Solar can be pre-ordered here for $35, and is due out in the first half of 2009.
