South Park developer's attention turns to future projects, Alpha Protocol sequel ruled out

Obsidian to launch Kickstarter for licensed title

With development on South Park: The Stick of Truth drawing to a close, Obsidian Entertainment wants to get the ball rolling on its next project with a Kickstarter campaign.

The studio, best known for titles such as Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas, has a number of potential games in mind, but the most promising is an unknown licensed property, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.

"There’s something we’re talking about that I think would be really cool, but it’s not an original property," studio boss Feargus Urquhart told the site. "It’s a licensed property, but it’s not Alpha Protocol. It’s something we can still do a ton of creative stuff with, though.

"And then the other thing is an original property. Also, there’s a third thing that somebody approached us with, but I really don’t think that’s going to work out.

"The hope is to come up with another Kickstarter that people would be interested in. My hope is that by March or April of next year, we’ll have something we can kind of start talking to people about."

Given that the studio specialises in RPGs, the genre of its next title is unlikely to be as mysterious as its subject matter. However, it is likely to use the technology Obsidian has developers for Pillars of Eternity, it’s next original IP and the result of its first successful Kickstarter. The crowd-funding campaign raised just short of $4m in 2012.
