Virtual reality firm seeking alternate sources

Oculus halting VR dev kit shipments as key components run dry

Oculus is set to temporarily halt shipments of its Oculus Rift development kits as key components for the tech is no longer being manufactured.

Posting on Reddit, Oculus community manager Andres Hernandez said as the parts were no longer available for production, the firm did not have the necessary materials to produce additional kits.

Limited stock is still available, but he said dev kits were "quickly running out". As a result, once supply runs out for each region, sales will be suspended.

Dev kits are still being sold in the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland, Norway and countries in the European Union.

Hernandez said Oculus is currently looking for alternate sources for the needed components, but did not have a timeline on when additional development kits would be available.

"We never expected to sell so many development kits and VR only made this much progress with the community’s support and enthusiasm," he said.

"Even though we never wanted to sell out, it’s a good problem to have – Thank you."
