Ouya storms past $1m Kickstarter goal within hours

Hackable console Ouya has shot past its $950k funding target on Kickstarter within hours of launching its crowdfunding campaign.

The Android-based platform, which plugs into the TV and will offer a similar App Store type service to Android and Apple, has garnered 10,469 backers at the time of writing, and shows little sign of abating.

The most popular pledge by contributors is for $99, with more than 8,000 donators paying the amount to receive an Ouya console on launch.

Three backers meanwhile have invested more than $10,000 in the project.

The new console is being back by the likes of Xbox co-creator Ed Fries, Jawbone Jambox designer Yves Behar and VP of business development at IGN Julie Uhrman.

The console will be fully open to developers to use, whilst it will also require apps on the store to use some form of free play.

The console is powered by a Tegra 3 Quad core processor, and features HDMI connection at 1080p HD, 8GB on-board flash and 1GB of RAM.

The controller will feature two analogue sticks, ten buttons and a touch screen, allowing developers to create both gesture controlled and more traditional titles.

Ouya founder Julie Uhrman said that if the campaign passed its funding goal, some of the extra funds would go towards other crowdfunding projects, similar to Brian Fargo’s proposed ‘Kick it Forward’ scheme.
