Update brings image differencing and more support for distributed development

Perforce hits version 2008.1

Perforce has released version 2008.1 of its software configuration management system.

The latest update extends file differencing to image files, meaning that users of the Visual Client can overlay different versions of images and isolate changes on the pixel level.

The Visual Client has also been updated to allow remote users to work offline and browse local files, while the Perforce Proxy now offloads file decompression to the client in order to boost performance.

“Our goal is to bring SCM to all enterprise contributors. Many of our customers use Perforce to manage development of their complete product lines, not just source code," said Nigel Chanter, chief operating officer of Perforce Software.

"Their developers are collaborating with artists, engineers, testers and technical writers to produce games, electronic devices, software and web applications."
