Well-known online games retailer funds SideQuest Studios.

Play-Asia funding games development

Hearing that there’s a new scrolling shooter coming from Japan won’t really be that surprising – but for new game Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer the surprise is in where its funding is coming from: online games store Play-Asia.

The site is making its first foray into games production by funding developer SideQuest Studios, which is working on the game.

Söldner-X will be published by Eastasiasoft, a company that wants to ‘recreate seemingly ‘lost’ game genres and consequently bring back true arcade action and fun to the home’. The new game is a shoot ’em up in the classic sense but presumably designed for for next-gen consoles, and presumably the likes of PSN and XBLA; the announcement released today talks of a game designed with widescreen HD graphics.

The game is due out at the end of the year – no word yet if Play-Asia’s involvement means the game will be available only via its store.
