Rumours of the so-called Sony Orbis project gather pace

PlayStation 4 ‘design sketch’ shows motion control camera mixed with mobile

Two design illustrations, thought to be related to Sony’s next generation games console, show customers dancing in front of a Kinect-like camera while another person views the footage from a connected mobile device.

The sketches, put together by Coque Design, have since been removed from the company’s website, yet were captured beforehand and are now being redistributed across the internet.

The picture, found below, shows Coque Design’s client was named as “Sony PlayStation”. The project was labelled “illustrations & Sketches for new PlayStation Orbis features”.

Yesterday, a Kotaku report claimed that Sony’s next generation console is codenamed PlayStation Orbis.

Sony has declined to comment on the unverified report.

The company invests in numerous R&D experiments, many of which are not picked for commercial release.

It is not clear whether the design sketches are related to PlayStation 4 hardware development. They do however symbolise Sony’s intention to expand its games offering across various devices and peripherals.

Earlier this week, Sony Worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida outlined his vision for the future of the company, stating he hoped PlayStation “will be present on any device with a screen, processor, or entry way, and they can all connect with each other”.
