Casual games firm acquires retro arcade specialist

PopCap Games buys developer Retro64

PopCap has expanded its internal development team via the acquisition of arcade games specialist Retro64.

The Chicago-based studio will become a satellite PopCap studio and remain managed by founder and chief producer Mike Boeh, continuing to make games for the web, PC, mobile and consoles.

"I’ve worked with Mike several times over the past decade, and we recently published Retro64’s ‘Venice’ game, so all of us at PopCap are familiar with Retro64’s design and development philosophy," noted Jason Kapalka, co-founder and chief creative officer of PopCap.

"We really respect the quality and focus on fun that Retro64 brings to the table, and are excited to be working with Mike on a full-time basis going forward."
