Project Eternity most funded game on Kickstarter

Project Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment has edged by the Double Fine adventure to take the record for most-funded game in Kickstarter history.

The campaign has reached $3,376,000 with 19 hours remaining, already beating the record set by Tim Schafer’s studio when it concluded the campaign that brought mainstream attention to the crowdfunding craze.

Since Double Fine’s rise to stardom several other high-profile developers have turned to the platform in the hopes of reviving old series and forgotten concepts abandonded in the push for ever-higher retail returns.

Project Eternity fits nicely into this category: promising a return to the old school isometric RPGs that made Obsidian’s founders famous while working at Black Isle.

With the developers behind games like Fallout, Fallout 2, Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Plansecape Torment on board, fans are thrilled to see the studio breaking away from the publishers many blame for Obsidian’s touch-and go receptions.

The studio has played this hand with amazing precision, pulling ever higher sums out of eager fans with a carefully designed series of reward tiers and "stretch goals" that promise more content at higher levels of funding.

Even if the game is a flop, Obsidian has set a new standard future gaming campaigns.
