Popular cross-platform network SDK looks to support small studios and hobbyists

RakNet now free for indie developers

The networking engine RakNet is now available for free to independent developers.

A cross-platform C++ SDK, RakNet counts Sony Online Entertainment, Codemasters, Unity Technologies, Foundation 9 and Epic Games China amongst its customers. It features a lobby system, autopatcher, voice communication, an object replication system and NAT punchthrough.

"We have had a good experience choosing RakNet as the network layer for our MMOG backend server solution," said Shen Li, CTO of Epic Games China. "We are especially impressed at its ease of integration and powerful feature set."
