5th Cell impressed by success of Outer Wilds

Scribblenauts dev crowdfunding on Fig

Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell is the latest developer to join video game crowdfunding platform Fig.

The studio has previously worked on titles such as the Scribblenauts franchise, which sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. Despite its success, the studio now plans to crowdfund a new original IP. Its campaign will begin on October 21st.

Fig was set up by former Double Fine COO Justin Bailey, and has the backing of partners such as Obsidian, InXile Entertainment, Double Fine and Harmonix. The platform lets consumers back new projects early in development, much like Kickstarter, while also giving accredited investors the chance to obtain equity in the project.

The first crowdfunding campaign on the site, Mobius Digital’s Outer Wilds, achieved its funding goal while also attracting over $800k in investment interest.

“We look forward to bringing on investors who want to share in the future financial success of the title, while helping us to bring the game’s unique universe to life,” said 5th Cell CEO Jeremiah Slaczka.

“We watched Fig’s first campaign, Outer Wilds, attract over $1 million in potential accredited investment and felt that of all the funding platforms, Fig’s was the perfect fit for our new IP.”
