Singapore Polytechnic sets up Unreal Technology lab

Epic Games China has teamed up with Singapore Polytechnic to create the region’s first Unreal Technology Lab, it was announced today.

The facility will be situated at an incubation facility at the Interactive and Digital Media Centre, and came as a result of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore’s trade mission to Shanghai-based games expo ChinaJoy. It will provide a range of technologies, content creation tools and infrastructure to support local studios, including training to benefit small- and mid-scale enterprises.

Singapore Polytechnic students will be able to use the platform as part of their curriculum, and will also get the chance to work together with industry partners using the engine as part of the Industry Training Program.

“Singapore Polytechnic is serious about the technology behind fun," said Singapore Polytechnic’s deputy principal of technology and innovation, Lim Peng Hun.

"We have several courses which train students for the game industry. The IDMC@SP is keen to collaborate with industry to catalyze the development new games and other interactive media. The setting up of the Unreal Technology Lab is an example of such collaboration.”

Paul Meegan, CEO of Epic Games China, added: “With Singapore’s robust intellectual property protection regime, and a highly skilled and talented workforce, locating the Unreal Technology Lab in Singapore allows us to serve the game development community in Southeast Asia.”

“The Unreal Technology Lab marks a milestone in digital media history here," commented Tan Kar Joo, senior director at the Cluster Development Group.
