Beta tests set to begin early next year

Square Enix opens up cloud gaming subsidiary Shinra Technologies

Square Enix has opened a new cloud gaming subsidiary call Shinra Technologies.

The firm will be based in New York and headed by president Yoichi Wada, the former CEO and current chairman of Square Enix.

Shinra aims to offer "new game experiences" through its proprietary cloud tech. It says it will achieve this by streaming games as video, with no specific hardware required to play games through the service. The firm also claims the tech can be used for both complex 3D open world titles and 2D sprite games, as well as allowing for “an unprecedented number of players in multiplayer games”.

Shinra is currently in negotiations with developers across the globe to use its tech. Beta tests are scheduled to begin in the US and Japan early next year.
